The Village of Barons is the place to be this Saturday if you want to have some family fun.

Barons Family Fun Day celebration goes July 7 this year, and the Barons Ag Society has brought back some old favourites. Although the society is technically in charge of putting on the event, Mary Bishop, Barons Ag Society president, says that it’s the whole community that puts it on.

“Kind of, we’re in charge, but the whole community chips in and does things for entertainment and activities on that day,” said Bishop. “It’s a combined effort.”

The day kicks off at 8 a.m., with a pancake breakfast at the community hall, sponsored by the village. The breakfast is free, although they are collecting donations for food banks in Claresholm and Picture Butte.

Once stomachs are full, at 10 a.m. a Farmers’ Market at the community hall will start, sponsored by the Barons Ag Society. Those looking to grab a last minute table there are encouraged to call Rita at 403-757-0005. The History Centre will open on Main Street from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

“They have different displays and artifacts to view,” said Bishop. “There’s also have a lot of family history books that are available if people want to take a look at them.”

Lunch will be available at the History Centre and the Farmers’ Market. The Legion will also be open for anyone who is looking for a drink and lunch, along with darts, cribbage and other games.

Entries for the parade line up starts at 10:30 a.m. on Railway Avenue, hosted by the Elks, with the parade itself kicking off around 11 a.m.

After the parade, the Barons Fire Hall will be hosting an open house and lunch. A community garage sale will go at various times and locations throughout the village.

The Ag Society will also be holding kids games in the afternoon from 1-3 p.m., but this year, they’ve changed the location from the tennis courts west of the community hall, to the east side of the hall. Although it’s not far from the original location, Bishop cites weather concerns for the change.

“Kids have a lot of fun when they come to that and there’s prizes,” said Bishop. “The tennis court is basically like asphalt or cement, and it gets very hot when it’s a hot day, so we decided to move it to the other side of the hall to make it, maybe a little more conducive to the weather, so maybe it won’t be quite as hot on the grass.”

Thursday ends with the Ag society’s Roast Beef Supper at the community Hall from 5-6:30 p.m.

Bishop says she is looking forward to getting out and seeing members of the community she hasn’t seen in a while, and hopes that she’ll see some former residents there as well.

“I hope that some people that maybe have left Barons maybe come back and have a visit with everyone, and take a look at some of the things that there are to see,” said Bishop. “Every one is welcome.”
