Town of Picture Butte sharing pieces of history

The Town of Picture Butte will be opening up its millennium capsule this summer in a ceremony scheduled for Aug. 15.

In a request for decision (RFD) Picture Butte mayor Cathy Moore spoke about the millennium capsule ceremony RFD and councillors were supportive of the recommendation and the idea.   

“Our director of parks and recreation has a recommendation that we open the capsule on Friday, August 15, 2025 as part of the Jamboree Days celebrations,” said Moore. “After the opening ceremony we will then allow the items inside to be displayed for a period of time.” 

She noted that during the next year the town will begin collecting new items from local schools and groups and pointed out an option for the closing ceremony. 

“The town will host a barbecue and closing ceremony for our 100-year celebration in 2026. The capsule can then be re-opened in correlation with the town’s 125, 150 and 175 year celebrations,” said Moore. 

The millennium capsule is opened every 25 years and was last sealed in 2000.
