Sunny South News Photo Submitted. FUN RUN: Participants will lace up for Coaldale’s 14th annual Family Fun Run on April 12. The event this year is raising funds for two community projects - the Kinette Club of Coaldale’s revitalization of the Kin Skate Park playground, and the Friends of St. Joseph’s efforts to expand the playground next to St. Joseph School. Two dollars from every entry will also be donated to the Coaldale Community Food Bank.

14th annual event set for April 12

Spring is the perfect time to get out and get active.

Runners and walkers will do just that, when they lace up for the 14th annual Coaldale 5K Family Fun Run on Sat. April 12.

The event starts at Coaldale Christian School at 10 a.m. and participants are encouraged to pick up their race package at Coaldale Christian School on Friday, April 11 between 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

“The fun run is to promote outdoor activity and physical fitness, but it’s also to bring the community together and support causes that promote physical activity outside of the run,” said Jacob Wiebe, marketing coordinator for the Coaldale Family Fun Run.

Deadlines to register are April 9 for paper registrations and April 11 for online registrations. Registration fees are $11 for youth and $22 for adults and there will be different category medals awarded and random prizes for participants.

Proceeds from this year’s event will help support two community projects – the Kinette Club of Coaldale’s revitalization of the Kin Skate Park playground and the Friends of St. Joseph’s efforts to expand the playground next to St. Joseph School.  In addition, $2 from every entry will be donated to the Coaldale Community Food Bank.

“Typically, (we donate) to the food bank or Rehoboth Christian Ministries – they are the two organizations we donate $2 to from every entry. We alternate (between them) every year,” said Wiebe.

The Coaldale Family Fun Run has grown in size and in support over the years noted Wiebe, from 100 participants and a couple of sponsors to several sponsors and more than 500 participants today, including people from across the region and some from as far away as Edmonton.

“We’re really trying to encourage a wide range of people – all abilities, all ages, just to try and get everyone out as much as we can,” he added.

Wiebe said they’ve received a lot of positive feedback over the years, from many who want to see the family fun run continue as an annual event and because of the difference it makes to the community every year.

“These (playground) projects are for everyone in the town,” said Wiebe. “You revitalize them, you make them bigger and you get new (ones). It just benefits everyone.”
