Since its inception in October 2019, Barons Memorial United Church Thrift Shop has been a place to find great deals while also functioning as a support system for the Barons Memorial United Church, funneling proceeds back into sustaining the church.

Robbin Gibb, Chair of the Barons Memorial United Church, shares the inspiration behind the shop, “We launched the Thrift Shop to support our church financially while providing the community with affordable shopping options.”

Situated at the former site of Gibb’s Agencies, the shop owes its existence to the generosity of Judie Gibb, who allows the space to be used for this cause.

“Household goods and décor are popular with our shoppers,” Robbin notes, “but some come for specific items of clothing, while others are just looking for something that catches their eye.”

Running a thrift shop comes with its share of challenges.

“We have amazing donations that come to us, but one of our biggest challenges is trying to clean items that are not quite ready to retail. This takes a great deal of time and can be frustrating as we have a limited workforce,” Robbin explains.

Despite these hurdles, the rewards are plentiful.

“Meeting people looking for a great buy and seeing their joy when they find something is our greatest reward.”

Donations are the lifeblood of the thrift shop, and there’s a straightforward protocol in place. Donations are welcome during regular hours, with a preference for clean, ready-to-use items.

“We ask that clothing be in good repair, clean, and ready to hang. We appreciate donations of clean household goods in working condition,” Robbin advises.

The shop is also a testament to the power of community in Barons, a small town with limited commerce. Robbin appreciates the local support, stating, “We appreciate the support of Gibb’s Insurance next door. Not only are the people there terrific, they have given donations and sometimes received packages for us.”

Looking ahead, the future is bright for the Barons Memorial United Church as it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2025.

“We are proud to have managed to keep the church operating with funds realized from our Thrift Shop,” Robbin says.

The goal is to attract enough volunteers to extend the shop’s hours and generate more income for essential repairs and maintenance.

“We would like to voice our appreciation to our customers, donors, and most importantly our volunteers who work in the shop and keep the doors open,” Robbin concludes.

As the community continues to rally around this beloved thrift shop, its impact on the town of Barons and the Barons Memorial United Church is undeniable. Whether you’re hunting for that perfect household item or looking to contribute to a worthy cause, the Barons Memorial United Church Thrift Shop welcomes you with open arms and countless opportunities to support and engage with the community.
