Picture Butte plans community garage sale

Posted on February 27, 2014 by Sunny South News

Come one, come all to the 2nd Annual Picture Butte Community Garage Sale June 21 — where another person’s junk could be another person’s treasure.

“Last year, the Town of Picture Butte council supported a community garage sale for the first time and thought it was a really good idea but what happened last year was it was kind of the last minute thing,” said Mike Derricott, chief administrative officer (CAO) for the Town of Picture Butte, adding this year the town wanted to do a better job of letting people know it was going to be happening and get the date out to the public, so people could plan to join in on the community garage sale. Derricott hopes many of the people planning to have spring garage sales will join in on June 21, so the town can reap the many benefits of more traffic and people checking out what Picture Butte has to offer.

“The idea is — people who are going to have garage sales out of their homes — we would hope many of them would be available and try to have it on that same day,” added the CAO.

The event will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there will also be space available to rent at the Picture Butte Arena for $15 to display gently-used goods to the masses.

“It’s just another event to help the community work together and hopefully we’re more effective when we’re all pulling in one direction,” noted Derricott.

According to Derricott, the town is planning on advertising the event through various outlets but it is recommended residents spruce up their garages and/or yards with balloons and signs to note of a sale happening. Derricott also noted the community garage sale idea was generated by residents coming forward to the town with the idea. “We’re really hoping that this will be an event that gains momentum,” said Derricott, adding the third Saturday in June of every year can be consistently devoted to a community-wide tourist attraction. “I know in some small communities it’s become an event that draws big numbers. There’s something about garage sales — the people that love it — they love it.”
