The Coaldale Copperheads wound up with one of their most successful seasons with a double overtime loss to the Cochrane Generals Friday night.
With the best of seven series at 3-1 for the Generals, the Coaldale squad put up a valiant effort in Cochrane.
The Gens are undefeated at home this season, and the two teams traded goals back and forth to an eventual 5-5 tie at the end of regulation.
Shots on goal were almost dead, even as a testament to the back and forth action.
To further the drama, starting goalie Dillan Kelly with a 5-5 score, collided with a Cochrane player in his crease breaking his skate blade with 28.4 seconds left in the third.
Back up Dylan Swanson was thrust into the high-tension action.
Swanson turned asides several shots late in the third and several more in the first overtime before the training staff repaired Kelly’s blade .
Swanson came back to the bench to a thunderous applause from Coaldale and Cochrane fans alike.
The back and forth action was eventually ended by a lightning fast two-on-one by Cochrane, as the puck slid past a sprawling Kelly at approximately the 12-minute mark of the second overtime.
During the game, Captain Craig Lyon ended his junior career with two goals, with additional goals coming from Mackenzie Karl, Clay Spencer and Ryan Swier.
This marks the end of the successful 2015-2016 season, and the third time the Copperheads have competed in the South Division final.
The Copperheads thank the efforts of all four graduating overage players Craig Lyon, Ty Mackenzie, James Price and Connor Gross.
All four of them contributed to winning the league title last year and this year’s success.
Lastly, the team would once again like to give thanks to the team’s coaching staff, volunteers, fans, sponsors and the community in general.
The team’s year-end banquet details have not been finalized.
