Christmas is already poking its tiny little tinsel and garland draped head out at stores, and for those who celebrate or indulge in Christmas festivities — fa la la la la. Sure, there’s Halloween-inspired attire and decorations plus Thanksgiving turkeys and fall coloured motifs to purchase for homes and offices but there’s only three months to get Christmas covered.
Visions of sugar plums dancing in your head and decking the halls seem to get an earlier start in the commerce kaleidoscope nowadays, at least from a consumerism point of view.
Spiritually and/or out of respect, many want to say “thanks” first, and pay remembrance prior to any wintery holiday shenanigans.
And, don’t forget, Christmas isn’t celebrated by everyone and there are many people out there with a “bah, humbug” spirit. So, even though some southern Albertans love the idea of having a head start on being able to purchase exterior illumination or fake trees or singing Santa Claus figurines — others want to wait until at least November or simply don’t celebrate the birth of the “C-man” or rather tone down the notion of holidayin’. And, those that do celebrate Christmas and the holiday spirit, need to respect that.
Kids are beginning to sort out a preliminary list of must-haves on the morning of Dec. 25. But, of course kids must first figure out what costume to don on Oct. 31, while out and about shouting, “trick or treat.”
As a parent, it is good to wait until closer to Halloween and Christmas to get presents or a costume — as, both will no doubt change a few times before the actual dates roll around. Don’t forget, Easter is just around the corner and it will be time to hide some chocolate eggs.
