Dear Editor,
Natural insect pollinators including honey bees and various native bee species serve an important ecological service in pollinating crops and various species of wildflowers.
Unfortunately due to various anthropogenic impacts such environmental pollution, indiscriminate and uncontrolled spraying of pesticides, bee diseases and lack of nutrition several indigenous bee species across Canada are seriously declining.
Not just bees but also other native insect pollinators like moths and butterflies, as well as some species of beetles and flies along with native bee species are being seriously threatened and endangered and are in serious need of conservation efforts.
Southern Alberta is one of the bee hotspots of Canada and the province of Alberta is the largest honey producer among all Canadian provinces.
It is important that we initiate nation wide conservation efforts for protecting native bees by developing long term, sustainable an environment friendly approaches like establishing Bee/Pollinator Sanctuaries at suitable/appropriate sites.
Thanking you.
Sincerely yours,
