When I was working shift in Power Plants, with quiet surroundings, I used to read The Living New Testament “Reach Out”.
Every Sunday I would read the Scriptures 2-3 chapters because the text was easy to read in modern English. The other engineers used to laugh at me reading the Bible, while they read Penthouse magazines. Since I had the knowledge to write inspirational verses I was enthused to recite them, and compose them into music. A Prodigal Son is one of many poems that I wrote.
A PRODIGAL SON
A Prodigal Son came up to his father
to have his property divided and shared.
He decided to take a long journey to a far
away country and fled
where he squandered his fortune and wealth.
But when his gold ran out, no one cared.
There was famine and drought throughout the land,
but a farmer gave him a helping hand,
and fed him less than any hired man.
He then realized that he could eat well, if he
would dwell in his father’s house, and
work for him if he returned.
When his father saw him coming in a distance
he was moved with compassion.
He ran toward his son and fell upon his neck and kissed him.
Then the son said “Father, I have sinned against heaven and
before you,
I am no longer worthy to be called your son.”
But the father said to his servant, fetch the best robe
and give him a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet.
Bring out the best meat to celebrate his return
because my son was dead and has come to life again.
Let us make merry and rejoice, as this was the choice of the
Lord.
He was lost and is found, and in his father’s house he is bound.
(Scripture according to Luke 15:11-32)
