Like most people looking back at 2020 one can only sigh and say, what the hell… 2020 was a year filled with trials and tribulations, but for me personally it was one for the history books.
As some of you might know, I suffered a brain aneurysm earlier this year and are still undergoing rehabilitation to fix my balance and eyes.
We all know the African saying “it takes a village” but the first time that I would witness this in action is not in my country South Africa, which I love so much, but in a little town in Alberta called Picture Butte.
I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that helped me and my family through this difficult time. The EMT staff for their swift response and assistance in time of my crisis, all the medical staff, and every person opening the door for me and saying hello when I walked by in a shop or store.
This festive season, my family wanted for none. Our house was filled with happiness, laughter and joy as we opened our gifts and had a Christmas feast due to the generosity of our community. I wish I can thank everyone personally by name, but I believe there is not enough paper to express myself and my family’s gratitude. The definition of community is: a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
I’m blessed to call Picture Butte my community and call Alberta my home.
