CAHL playoffs continue for Coaldale Cobras

The past weekend saw another handful of games as Central Alberta Hockey League playoffs continued for Coaldale Cobra teams.

U11 Tier 3

The U11 Tier 3 Cobras were onto the semi-finals this past weekend as the team faced off against Bow Island/Foremost.

Game 1 saw the Cobras hit the road to Foremost and the Cobras were undeterred from being on the road as they skated to a 9-3 win. River Pollard was unstoppable as the Cobra collected four goals and an assist, Nova Mulder had a pair of goals, Travis Jackson had two assists, Rudy Wojszel, Nixon Noble, and Dominic Di-Loreto, while Jean Hoffman had a single assist. Elliott Hass was between the pipes and the Cobra netminder made 31 saves on 34 shots.

Game 2 saw the teams return to Coaldale and once again, the Cobras proved victorious as they were able to secure a 7-5 win and a series win. Wojszel and Jackson had two goals and an assist each, Mulder had a pair of goals, and Pollard had a goal and an assist. Hass was back in net for Coaldale and the goalie made 17 saves on 22 shots.

With another series win, the U11 Cobras see themselves in the T3 Championship with the Picture Butte Blades waiting on the other side.

U11 Tier 6

The semi-final was up next for the U11 Tier 6 Cobras were back on the ice to take on Redcliff.

Game 1 went in Coaldale on Saturday morning and the visitors were unruly guests as they rolled over the Cobras 9-1. Paxton Wiebe had the lone Coaldale goal while Mira Anderson was in net for the Cobras.

Game 2 went on Sunday afternoon as the teams reconvened in Redcliff, and like Game 1, Redcliff was able to jump out to an early lead and hold on for a 9-7 win. Ben Wojszel and Jackson Batkin each had a hat trick and an assist, Broden Davidson had a single tally, and Karli Ohlmann and Dylan Yackulic had an assist each. Anderson was back in net for the Cobras and the netminder made 18 saves on 27 shots.

The Tier 6 Cobras now shift to the consolation side of the tournament with a matchup against Brooks coming in the semi-final.

U13

After being deadlocked 1-1 in their series against Pincher Creek, the teams hit the ice for the third and final game this past weekend.

After a pair of exciting games that went to overtime, the teams were back on the ice in Pincher Creek last Wednesday night. While the Cobras battled hard, they were unable to pull off the upset as they fell 5-2 in the game and 2-1 in the series. Riley Kauenhowen and Ryker Orsten had the Cobra goals with Caleb Burton and Beckett Hurt drawing an assist each. Colton Peters was between the pipes and the Cobras netminder made 48 saves on 53 shots.

Pincher Creek would go on to face Fort Macleod in the T4 Blue Championship and Fort Macleod would win in two straight.

U15

It was a second-round matchup with Pincher Creek this past weekend for the U15 Cobras. Game 1 went in Pincher Creek on Saturday morning and the Cobras were all business as they beat down the home team 9-3. Gage Lyckman had two goals and an assist, Lane Broderson had a goal and two assists, Kenneth Galbraith had two goals, Killian Erick and Jonah Hass had a goal and an assist, Layne Kyle and Dalton Damen had a goal each, and Grady Knoblich and Carsen Roy had an assist each. Logan Van Der Leest was in net for Coaldale and the goalie made 32 saves on 35 shots.

Game 2 saw a Pincher Creek bounce back as the teams reconvened in Coaldale on Sunday afternoon. This time, the Cobras were unable to get the win as Pincher Creek secured a 5-2 win. Hass and Broderson had the Cobra goals with Hudson Adams, Damen, and Mason Van Ee collecting an assist each. Van Der Leest was back between the pipes and the netminder had 27 saves on 32 shots.

The third and deciding game of the series is set for Friday night in Pincher Creek. Game time is TBA as of Monday morning.

U18

After collecting a Game 1 win over Kainai in late February, the teams met again last weekend for Game 2. With the series on the line, Kainai was hoping to extend the series.

 The Cobras, on the other hand, had different plans and the team was able to collect a 6-3 win and a series sweep.

Brett Hudey had two goals for the Cobras with Drayton Broderson and Hector Peralta-Lopez collecting a goal and an assist, Tyler Wiebe and Kyle Harrington had the other Cobra goals, and Carter Opp and Tanner Wiest collected an assist each. Brenden Duda was between the pipes for the Cobras and the netminder was stellar making 39 saves on 42 shots.

Coaldale now turns their focus to Chestermere in T4 Orange playoffs as the two teams clash in the semi-final. The winner of the series will take on Airdrie for the banner.
