The Central Alberta Hockey League is in its final stages, but Coaldale Cobra teams were back on the ice this past weekend battling in the playoffs.
U11 Tier 3
The U11 Tier 3 Cobras had their eye on the T3 Blue banner this past weekend as they lined up against the Picture Butte Blades.
Game 1 went on Saturday afternoon and the Cobras were able to win a high scoring game 11-8. Travis Jackson put the team on his back with a seven goal, one assist pearformance, while Nova Mulder had two goals and two assists, Rudy Wojszel had a goal and an assist, Nixon Noble had two assists, Jake Waggener had a goal, and Alistair Poettcker had an assist. Elliot Hass was the starting netminder and the goalie made 14 saves on 22 shots.
With the title on the line, the Cobras returned home for Game 2. While no game sheet was available Monday morning, the Cobras did secure the banner and became T3 Blue champions.
U11 Tier 6
The past weekend saw the U11 Tier 6 Cobras take on Brooks in the consolation semi-final.
The Cobras hit the road for Game 1 and the home team was able to secure a 7-3 win. The Cobras saw a goal and an assist from Jackson Batkin and a goal from Paxton Wiebe and Jake Hagen. Mira Anderson was in between the pipes for Coaldale and the goalie made 14 saves on 21 shots.
Game 2 saw the teams head to Coaldale for the deciding game of the series. While the home team battled hard until the final buzzer, Brooks was able to pull out a 7-5 win. Ryan Scriven-Hirsche had a pair of goals for Coaldale, Emmett Conrad and Batkin had a goal and an assist each, Dylan Yackulic had a single snipe, and Wiebe and Drake Labelle had an assist each. Roman Howg and Anderson shared the crease in the final game.
Brooks now takes on Strathmore in the consolation final.
U15
A date in the U15 T3 White final was on the line Friday night as the U15 Cobras hit the road to Pincher Creek for the third and deciding game.
With the teams finding the back of the net often in the game, three unanswered goals late in the third period sealed an 8-5 victory for Pincher Creek. Dalton Damen had a hat trick for the Cobras with Lane Broderson and Kenneth Galbraith potting the other Coaldale goals. Grady Knoblich, Marco Burnett, Jonah Hass, Kaede Wakefield, and Abby Galbraith all had an assist in the game. Dakota Hurst got the start for the Cobras and the netminder made 22 saves on 30 shots.
Despite the Friday night loss, the Cobras were right back on the ice on Saturday as they suited up in the consolation bracket with a matchup against Claresholm. Game 1 went in Claresholm and the Cobras were able to bounce back efficiently with a 4-0 win. Wakefield had a pair of goals and an assist, Broderson had two assists, Hass and Abby Galbraith had the other goals, and Layne Kyle, Jackson Stone, Hudson Adams, and Knoblich had an assist each. Logan Van Der Leest got the start in net and the netminder was perfect making all 23 saves.
Sunday afternoon saw the teams return for Game 2 in Coaldale and the results were similar as the Cobras cruised to a 5-1 win and a 2-0 series sweep. Adams had a goal and an assist in the game, Burnett and Carsen Roy had a pair of assists each, Knoblich, Stone, Kenneth Galbraith, and Hass found the back of the net once each, and Broderson and Abby Galbraith had an assist. Hurst was back in net for the Cobras and the goalie was busy making 61 saves on 62 shots.
Next up for the U15 Cobras is a shot at the bronze as they take on the Picture Butte Blades this coming weekend.
U18
After an opening round with against Kainai in the T4 Orange quarter-finals, the U18 Cobras had Chestermere in the second round.
Game 1 saw the teams meet in Coakdale on Saturday night and after both teams found the back of the net once in the second period, the third saw a tight defensive battle. With under five minutes left to play, Chestermere would break the tie and hold on for a 2-1 win. Kaiden Damen had the lone goal for Coaldale with Tanner Wiest and Drayton Broderson drawing assists. Brenden Duda was rock solid in net making 44 save son 46 shots.
With the Cobras hoping to extend the series, they hit the road to Chestermere on Sunday night. The home team though was eager for a chance at the T4 Orange banner as they skated to a 6-2 win in the game and a sweep in the series. Brett Hudey had both Cobra goals while Hector Peralta-Lopez and Ryden Yackulic had an assist each. Duda was back between the pipes and the netminder made 35 saves on 41 shots.
Chestermere now takes on Airdrie in the T4 Orange finals.
