The team of organizers behind the Coaldale Family Fun Run are gearing up for the 12th annual 5km race on April 22.
Since its inception, the event has brought together community members, as well as student and corporate teams to participate. The event’s objectives include encouraging healthy outdoor activity and support family time, and to bring community together in Coaldale.
Event coordinator for the 2023 race Jacob Wiebe, said the number of participants each year has varied since the event came online.
“Before COVID, we peaked at around 700,” he said, adding that in recent years, attendance has been down in comparison.
“Over the past few years, there have been 400-500 (participants) and I think we are on pace to surpass 500 again this year,” and added he is hopeful the event will see a return to pre-COVID participants.
With a family and community focus, proceeds raised from the event will support local charity and the Coaldale Food Bank, by donating $2 from every race entry. Additional proceeds help support various community enhancement projects.
“In the past, there have been things like playground facelifts and enhancements to green spaces,” said Wiebe. Other enhancement projects over the years include financial supports for wellness and sport initiatives which benefit residents.
“There was a donation made to the Link Pathway Project, as well as donations to provide free skating and sponsored ice times to the community, and equipment and jersey donations for local sports teams.”
In an effort to get community members out and moving, the event is marketed as either a 5km walk or run. Although there is certainly a competitive component for some, many participants are keen to just take advantage of the fresh air and community, especially families.
Wiebe added, “we actually do offer a prize for the fastest stroller pusher.”
Options for corporate teams provide businesses with an opportunity to get their name out in the community and market their business. The event also encourages student teams from any current Kindergarten to High School (K-12) to participate and compete for prizes.
The 5km route has not changed since 2018. The race will start at 10 a.m. at Coaldale Christian School on April 22. Racers must register before April 21, as race day entries will not be permitted.
