Picture Butte & District Ag Society is kicking off the organization’s 50th summer as a society with the return of the Farmer’s Day community barbecue on Friday, June 9.
Farmers Day is returning to Picture Butte this Friday from 11:30 am to 1:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Community Center in Picture Butte. Sponsored by the Picture Butte & District Ag Society, the event will be a celebration of farming and agriculture within the community. This year, the Ag Society is also celebrating its 50th year in operation, making 2023’s event even more special.
The event will feature a delicious BBQ serving up burgers, drinks, and cake for all attendees. Additionally, some local farmers will have equipment parked at the BBQ for people to take a look at and learn more about the farming industry in the area.
Secretary for the Picture Butte & District Ag Society, Leanne de Kok, said this is the first time in quite a while that the society will be putting on a Farmer Day Event.
“The last time this was hosted was years ago; no one remembers the year, but it used to be a big deal. Some of our senior board members even remember it as a day off school. I myself remember a BBQ for Farmer’s Day when I was a child,” de Kok said.
Farmer’s Day celebrations have a long history in Alberta, dating back over 100 years. It was first established as a way to celebrate the hard works and contributions of farmers across the Province. Today, FArmer’s Day continues to recognize the hard work and importance of contributions made by farmers and the critical role they play in the economy and communities.
With the return of the Farmer’s Day event this Friday, it is the perfect opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the importance of farming and agriculture in their day-to-day lives and to celebrate the society’s 50th anniversary.
For those interested in getting more involved with the Picture Butte & District Ag Society de Kok encouraged people to reach out to them at agsociety@picturebutte.ca, to get involved in this year’s annual Jamboree Days event in August, and potentially another event scheduled for later in the year.
