During the County of Lethbridge Council Meeting that took place on February 1, Administration reported to Council that Lethbridge Fire Services has requested a letter of support from Council for a grant application for Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) FRIAA (Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta) has.

The grant, Administration said, is intended to establish a Wildfire Preparedness Plan for the City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge County surrounding area. Fire Services, Administration said, have also asked for the Regional Manager of Emergency Services to participate in the project’s committee to ensure adequate representation from Lethbridge County and to assist with the plan.

Councilor Sayers responded by saying that this is a great opportunity for Lethbridge County, as it shows their willingness to collaborate with the City of Lethbridge, and the other key part is the County will be taking an active role and being part of it too.

That said, Councilor Sayers made a motion that the County of Lethbridge provide the letter of support for the grant application and the motion was carried.

The rest of Council shared that they were of the mind that when there is a wildfire event, the wildfire has no consideration for municipal boundaries; it is going to go where it wants to go and requires a combined effort to do everything to address it, so something like this opportunity is not only wonderful, but necessary to be involved in.
