Regarding Coaldale chamber’s VLT letter

Posted on April 21, 2020 by Sunny South News

I see on the Town of Coaldale Web site that the Coaldale Chamber of Commerce has written a letter to the council in support of a business owner’s request to set aside the results of a recent plebiscite on VLT’s. This is to be dealt with at Councils meeting on the 14th of April.

Now, just to be clear, I don’t have any issues with the Chamber of Commerce working to support businesses in the Town of Coaldale. But the hypocrisy of this letter is mind blowing, to say the least.

It was only a few months ago that this same Chamber of Commerce was asking this same council to call for a plebiscite on an issue because the chamber was of the opinion that the will of the people was not being properly reflected by a properly elected council. But now, they want to encourage council to overturn the will of the people. Just a little over 2 years ago, the residents of Coaldale, in response to a plebiscite, said no to VLT’s.

When the Chamber does not like council’s decision, they want a plebiscite, but when they don’t like the results of a plebiscite they dare to ask this council to overturn the results of the plebiscite. In the vernacular we might say, you can’t suck and blow at the same time. Or you should probably write; It seems that the Chamber of Commerce is recommending actions that are incompatible with each other.

I trust that council will do the correct thing and respect the results of the plebiscite.
