A touch of royalty

Posted on August 11, 2021 by Sunny South News

Dear Editor: In 1981, Prince Charles and Lady Di wed July 29 – the same day as Herbie Hinton and my birthdays. We sent a letter to the royals and received a reply from Queen Elizabeth’s Lady-in-Waiting thanking us for it.

There are numerous people who celebrate their birthdays July 29. Herbie was born on that day to his parents Fred and Gladys Hinton. Fred was my chief engineer at Eldorado – a mining company.

Gladys operated a flower shop called the “Shady Lady.” When Fred took a vacation he had me act as chief engineer of the powerhouse. Fred loved his cabin at the Beaver Lodge Lake – a great place to spend his vacation.

Before the uranium mine shut down in 1982, the Crown corporation allotted a new cookhouse, purchased a new 737 plane and built numerous houses.

Fred and his family moved to Port Hope, ON – and Lydia and I moved to Taber. The company paid for our move.

Paul Jones, Coaldale.
