Coaldale council names new interim CAO

Coaldale’s town council has named a new interim Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), as it continues with the process of selecting a new CAO.

Following a regular council meeting held Apr. 14 Mayor Kim Craig announced Kalen Hastings, director of municipal relations, will serve as interim CAO.

“Town Council is confident in Kalen’s ability to fulfill the responsibilities of interim CAO and provide clarity and stability during a time of obvious transition for the Town,” said Craig.

Mayor Craig said town council is trying a relatively new concept in the search for a new CAO. A consultant has been working with staff to engage them in the process of determining the qualities the next CAO the town should have.

“While the process has been lengthy, we are hopeful it will set us up for a successful outcome, benefiting both our staff and our residents,” said Craig.

Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Michelle Overbeeke, who had been designated interim CAO, is currently on medical leave.

Hastings has been with the town for almost four years, originally serving as director of community services where he helped plan, secure grant funding and see construction through on new and upgraded recreation facilities such as the Spray Park, the Quads Sportsfields and the Sportsplex arena dressing room expansion.

He was named to his current position with the town two years ago and has been focused on economic development in Coaldale.

“We’re a great team with an excellent staff. While I am happy to step up and assist the organization during this transitional time, I don’t view this as a one-person effort,” said Hastings.
