Albertans are wearing pink today (Feb. 22) to show their support for safe and inclusive schools, workplaces and communities.
Pink Shirt Day began when two young students wore pink to support a classmate who was being bullied. Since then, Pink Shirt Day has become a powerful movement, and is recognized across Canada every year.
This year, the provincial government is reminding Albertans, “It’s Okay To Be You.”
In support of Pink Shirt Day, David Eggen, minister of education, Irfan Sabir, minister of community and social Services, and Lori Sigurdson, minister of seniors and housing, joined students at a junior high school to celebrate the day in Edmonton.
“Our government is proud to partner with schools and communities to support Pink Shirt Day. It is so important for all students to feel safe and cared for in their schools. I want them to know our government does not tolerate bullying and we will always stand up for them,” said Eggen in a recent media release.
“Everyone deserves to live, learn, work and pray in a safe community, and no one should feel like they can’t be themselves. Today, and every day, we all have a role to play in preventing bullying. Together, we will build an Alberta where everyone is respected and safe,” added Sabir.
The provincial government provides supports, such as the 24-hour bullying helpline, 1-888-456-2323 and an online chat. You can also visit alberta.ca/bullying for resources and a chat line to speak with someone who can help. Albertans are encouraged to post pink shirt pictures to social media using #ABPinkShirtDay and #BeYou.
