Picture Butte is currently in the process of choosing the new pool building’s facade.
During their regular June 10 meeting, Picture Butte town council was presented with a placement option for the name of the new Cor Van Raay and Community Aquatic Centre on the pool building’s entrance.
In documents provided by administration, the pool’s contractor, Premiere Custom Homes Ltd was proposed that ‘Cor Van Raay & Community Aquatic Centre’ be placed on a strip above the front entrance doors, with ‘Aquatic Centre’ appearing vertically in larger type along the front of the building.
In the original mock up designs, the previous pool’s name, Lions Aquatic Centre, has appeared vertically on the front of the building. However, the new name wouldn’t fit in the same spot.
“They didn’t feel that Cor Van Raay and Community Aquatic Centre would look good or fit in there. You’ll have to look at two lines,” said Keith Davis, CAO for the town. “So they just kept the ‘Aquatic Centre’, and than they recognized ‘Cor Van Raay & Community Aquatic Centre’ above the entrance to the door.”
Once council approves the design, Davis said he can inform Premiere to proceed with it.
Coun. Teresa Papworth noted that for “fitting part of it, that’s the best spot.”
Mayor Cathy Moore said her concern had been whether who the building was named for would be okay with the placement, and “I was told that he would be”.
Council unanimously passed a motion to approve the placement, and direct administration to inform Premiere to go ahead with it. Coun. Joe Watson was absent from the meeting.
