A redevelopment plan for the Civic Square area has been approved.
A public hearing for a Civic Square Area Redevelopment Plan Bylaw was held during Coaldale town council’s regular Oct. 10 meeting.
Area Redevelopment Plan Bylaw 878-P-09-23 – or the Civic Square ARP bylaw – aims to set out the Town’s goals and strategies for the redevelopment and revitalization of the Civic Square development area, taking place over the next five years in accordance with the town plan, or Municipal Development Plan, and other planning documents. The Civic Square ARP pertains to portions of land located south of 20th Avenue, between 19th Street and 18th Street, for consideration at a public hearing, and will provide a framework for the preservation or improvement of land and buildings; the rehabilitation, removal, construction or placement of building; and for establishing, improving or relocation of roads, public utilities or other services in a specific area of Civic Square.
First reading of the bylaw took place during council’s regular Sept. 11 meeting.
No one spoke for or against the bylaw during the public hearing.
According to the Municipal Government Act, “A council may (a) designate an area of the municipality as a redevelopment area for the purpose of any or all of the following: (i) preserving or improving land and buildings in the area; (ii) rehabilitating buildings in the area; (iii) removing buildings from the area; (iv) constructing or replacing buildings in the area; (v) establishing, improving or relocating roads, public utilities or other services in the area; (vi) facilitating any other development in the area, (b) adopt, by bylaw, an area redevelopment plan, (c) in accordance with this section and Division 6, provide for the imposition and collection of a levy to be known as a “redevelopment levy”, and (d) authorize a designated officer, with or without conditions, to perform any function with respect to the imposition and collection of that redevelopment levy”.
Following the public hearing, council performed second and third and final reading of the bylaw.
