The Coaldale Public Library has a Chess Club.

“The purpose of Chess Club is to teach kids the fundamentals of chess, helping them to develop critical and analytical thinking, and interpersonal skills,” said Dothlyn MacFarlane, former Head Librarian for the Coaldale Public Library.

The course, MacFarlane said, is scheduled to start on January 16 and will run for ten weeks in the evenings from 6-7:00 p.m.

MacFarlane said that the library has offered this program every fall and winter since 2019.

“This program wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Coaldale Public Library Friends Society,” said MacFarlane. “With their help we are able to subsidize the cost of the programs for a set amount of participants. We also must thank Jumping Knight Chess School for lending materials and instruction for the course. This is a fantastic way to learn one of the world’s oldest games while also getting the opportunity to create a community around it.”
