Lethbridge County is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2024. According to Tory Campbell, reeve for Lethbridge County, it was incorporated as a municipality in 1964. “Since its inception sixty years ago, we have grown to become Alberta’s most productive agricultural community, generating over $4 billion annually in economic activity. We are proud of the innovative spirit that exists here and that has allowed the county to thrive, even in difficult economic times,” said Campbell. He says that just as farming practices have evolved over time, so too have the size and scale of operations within the county. It is home to several large-scale intensive livestock operations and greenhouses and has also seen significant investments in agri-food processing facilities that allow products that are grown here to be finished here, keeping more money in the local economy.
The county, Campbell says, has also seen sustained residential growth with people choosing to live in it for its rural lifestyle, while still being close to Lethbridge, the nearest major service centre. As a result, Campbell says, several residential subdivisions have been established over the last six decades for those looking to enjoy acreage life in a quiet country setting. Campbell states that Lethbridge County’s contribution to the provincial GDP through its ag industry is significant for a municipality of its size, at well over $700 million annually. Because of the stability of agriculture, Campbell says, Lethbridge County has been able to better weather economic downturns. Additionally, Campbell says, the county’s ag industry also provides numerous jobs for workers throughout the region, further contributing to the growth and well-being of the area.
“As we look toward the future, there is great opportunity for Lethbridge County,” said Campbell. “We have a strong and thriving agricultural industry that continues to grow at a rapid pace, providing the highest-quality food to consumers across Canada and around the world. We will also continue working closely with our regional partners and neighbours to help move the region forward for the benefit of us all.” As far as honouring the milestone 60th anniversary goes, Campbell says that staff are in the process of planning events and initiatives that will be held throughout 2024 and more information will be announced in the coming months.
