A former Picture Butte athlete has been named an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) tournament all-star following a gold medal match last weekend.
After defeating the Olds College Broncos in the quarter-finals, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s futsal team then defeated the Keyano College Huskies in the semifinals before taking on the SAIT Trojans in the finals on March 10.
According to a Kodiaks media release, the Kodiaks faced, “challenging opponents”, including the Keyano College Huskies, who were the undefeated reigning futsal champions and the North’s top seed in the league. The Kodiaks lost their first game against the Huskies 1-2, but later defeated the top seed in the semi-final match on March 10, 2-1. Hailing from Picture Butte, goalkeeper Jordan Quinn, “kept the Huskies from scoring, sending the game to overtime.”
Following the gold medal match in which the Kodiaks were defeated by the SAIT Trojans (0-1), three Kodiaks women were named ACAC tournament all-stars: Jordan Quinn, a third year Bachelor of Nursing student from Picture Butte and Megan Morrison, a third year Bachelor of Nursing student from Medicine Hat were both honoured with standout player selections. Kodiaks teammate Taylor Hrycun, a fifth year General Arts and Science student from Edmonton was also honoured as a standout player, in addition to South Division All-Conference recognition.
The gold medal women’s match saw the Kodiaks meet the South’s No. 1-ranked team, the SAIT Trojans. Although the score was tied at zero at halftime, the Trojans scored a late goal in the second half, winning gold.
Futsal, unlike soccer, which is played outdoors, is played on an indoor court which is smaller than a regular outdoor soccer field.
