Seniors form the backbones of our communities.

Throughout every small town in southern Alberta and beyond, you’ll find people who built up businesses, contributed to community organizations, and volunteered tirelessly for local sports, among many other things.

Now, as Seniors’ Week approaches, it’s time to give back and recognize those that have given so much.

In Coaldale, this will take the form of a big one-day celebration set for June 5 inside the community’s Civic Square on Main Street. This event is hosted by the Coaldale Seniors’ Advisory Committee and the Town of Coaldale and is supported by Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).

The celebration will include two entertainment acts and lunch, all for only $5.

“It’s a great way to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions seniors have made, and are still making, to our communities, and recognize how important it is to recognize them,” said Cindy Lauwen, Volunteer Services Co-ordinator for Family and Community Support Services.

FCSS is supplying the manpower and staff to ensure the event goes off without a hitch, an event that will feature Double Vision, Canada’s only identical twin magic act, who have 30 years of professional experience across North America.

“They’re pretty well known,” said Tara-Lynn Craig of the Coaldale Seniors’ Advisory Committee, who is hosting the event. “They’ve played at the Prime Minister’s residence and in Las Vegas and it’s just good, clean, family entertainment.”

Joining the Saskatchewan-based twin magic and comedy show act will be the Lethbridge band, The Good Timers.

“They played any kind of music the older generation would like,” said Craig. “They’ve played for us before and they’ve been a very big hit.”

For FCSS, the chance to assist the Coaldale committee was an easy decision, according to Outreach Services Supervisor Kaitlynn Weaver, who added it’s certainly not the only Seniors’ Week event where locals will benefit from FCSS volunteers.

“FCSS staff supports Seniors’ Week activities throughout the region,” she said. “It’s all about helping out and being good neighbours.”

And speaking of neighbours, it’s not only Coaldale residents that will have the opportunity to kick up their heels in Coaldale on June 5, as seniors from the entire FCSS coverage area are invited to stop by Civic Square from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

To register for the event, visit the FCSS website at www.fcss.ca, call Lauwen at 403-915-7063 or reach out to Craig at 403-715-6593.
