Back for its second year, the Terry Fox Run in Picture Butte is set for September 21, and everyone is welcome to participate.

Sarah Van Gunst, event organizer, shares, “This is for every ability and takes place on the sidewalks. We are not shutting down roads. We are reaching out to anyone who wants to participate. Runners, walkers, scooters, wheelchair users, bikes, strollers; it’s even pet friendly.”

The run is not a marathon, but a way to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.

Van Gunst adds, “There are two routes that will wind through Picture Butte, a 2K and a 5K.”

She continues, “On the 21st, the opening ceremony takes place at 8:45 am, with the registration table opening before that at 8 am. We are hosting a by-donation pancake breakfast at the start/finish line (Lion’s Park). The food for the breakfast was donated by P T Pharmacy. The grill and equipment have been donated by the Picture Bute Lions Club. The Town of Picture Butte is supporting us by giving us access to Lions Park and allowing us to place signage around town.”

Attendees are invited to register in advance at https://run.terryfox.ca/55516U. Event details are on the Town of Picture Butte Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/townofpb/).

Those who cannot participate but wish to donate can click the red “Donate” button on the Picture Butte registration page. Donations over $20 will receive a tax receipt.

Whether you are running, walking, biking, or donating, you are supporting a very worthy cause.

The Terry Fox Run is an annual event held to raise funds for cancer research, inspired by Terry Fox’s dream of a world without cancer. It has become a tradition in Canada, with nearly 600 communities participating. The run supports innovative cancer research across Canada, aiming to improve diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life for those affected by cancer. Since the 1940s, survival rates for all cancers combined have increased significantly, thanks in part to efforts like the Terry Fox Run. Participants are continuing Terry’s legacy of perseverance and hope. Learn more about the Terry Fox Run and its longstanding history at https://terryfox.org/.
