The Coaldale Copperheads clinched first place in the Heritage League’s South Division this past weekend. This is the organization’s first time in eight years to finish at the top.
Currently, on an eight-game winning streak, the Snakes were helped by a three-game slide this past weekend by the second place Okotoks Bisons.
Saturday night, the Snakepit was visited by the surging Cochrane Generals, who are just three points behind the Bisons. The Coaldale club came on top with a convincing 5-1 victory before a just about soldout crowd.
Copperheads forward Colby Murray established another new club record taking over the teams new “all time career goals,” which as of the night put him at 82 goals. Other goals scored against Cochrane were Holden Lamb, Calvin Swanson, Connor Gross and James Price. Sunday night, the Snakes faced the last place High River Flyers and notched a 5-2 victory to seal the south division regular season title, with four more regular season games to go. Colby Murray, with another strong night, scored two, and singles from Craig Lyon, Connor Gross, and Alex Barthel. Goalies Kelly and Carefoot each took a night on the job.
The team is away this coming weekend but back home on the Jan. 31 at 8:30 p.m. The last league game is scheduled for Feb. 7 at 8:30 p.m. against the leading North Division’s Blackfalds. The two games will be the last games to use up season tickets. The Copperheads will keep fans posted on playoff information, as soon as set — after securing first, the team will have a bye the first round.
It’s already been a busy New Year for the Wilbur Ellis Picture Butte Pee Wee Blades. The team played two games last weekend. The first, against Magrath, was a close game in which ‘Butte was a head all game until the last five minutes. This was when Magrath’s Ethan Anderson and Nate Dick turn on the heat and scored or assisted in six goals. Up to that point the Blades had scored five goals of their own. Caden Heins scored two and assisted with one, Will Neudorf scored two, Easton Heins with one, and Donavon McDowell, Micheal Grant, and Anthony Mack all contributing with assists.
Later in the weekend, the Blades hosted Vauxhall. This was the team’s fourth time playing Vauxhall. The Blades had a great game and beat the Sabres 9-1. Goals were added by Neudoft (1), McDowell (2), Mack (1), Riley McCloud (2), Caden Heins(2), and Easton Heins (1). Assisting on those goals were McCloud (1), McDowell (2), Caden Heins (3), Easton Heins (2), Ethan Slomp (1), and Grant (2). Jesse Heins worked hard between the pipes all weekend.
This weekend the team travelled to Irvine to play the Bulldogs. It was a difficult game. Both Nathan Maagyar and Jesse Heins took their turns in net. The team only scored three goals. Caden Heins with two and Sebastian Liska scored one. Assisting on the goals were Jordan Groenenboom, Anthony Mac and Caden Heins.
