Coaldale Christian is on top of the 1A boys basketball world here in Alberta.
The high school team completed a dominant run in the 1A Boys Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association Provincial Championships with a 94-62 win in the final over No. 3 ranked Airdrie.
Owen Senneker had 24 to lead the way for Coaldale, while Asher Slomp had 22, Darren Mckay had 13 and Blake Bareman added 11.
No. 1-ranked Coaldale Christian earned first-round bye and cruised through the quarterfinal with a big 109-47 win over No. 9 Consort.
Then, Coaldale had another easy win with a 98-42 victory over No. 4 South Central.
The No. 2 ranked team out of Coalhurst also had a bye in the first round. But things didn’t go as planned in round two, as the favourites were upset by No. 10 E.H. Walter.
That pushed Coalhurst to the B Pool, which was much friendlier to the team. Coalhurst took down No. 6 Fox Creek by a score of 82-41 and then won the B Pool title with a 65-59 victory over No. 5 Worsley.
In 2A boys provincials, No. 5 Kate Andrews started strong with a first-round win over No. 12 Tofield, by a score of 83-57. But the Coaldale team was eliminated from championship contention in the quarters after a 93-75 loss to Sexsmith.
In the B Pool, Kate Andrews topped No. 9 Harry Collinge and then won the consolation title with a 97-71 victory over No. 6 Heritage Christian.
The 2A girls provincial tournament in Lethbridge had Kate Andrews enter as the No. 4 seed, as the team earned a first-round bye.
But the second round was not kind to Kate Andrews, as the team fell 69-45 to No. 5 Sexsmith.
That pushed KAte Andrews to the B Pool, where the team defeated No. 8 Oilfields 58-52. The Coaldale team then won the consolation title with a 46-35 win over No. 11-ranked Lomont.
